Getting Started on the Homestead in Nevada

Now is the time

As many of you know, I write articles every once in a while for http://www.heritagehomesteaders.com. My first article for them was a “Who am I” post. My second one was published the other day. 🙂 I can’t post the whole thing here for obvious reasons, but I can give you an exerpt and link you to it. I hope you read the full article and then stick around Heritage Homesteaders and read some more. They have a great group of writers over there. 🙂

Whithout further ado, my second ever, non-self-published article:

“I bought two apple trees today. It’s the first time I’ve ever bought a tree. We always said we wanted to plant some trees, especially fruit trees. But we never did. The whole eight years since we bought our first house and we never once bought or planted a tree. There was always an excuse. We didn’t have the money. The best season for planting wasn’t there yet, or already passed. It was too hot to be digging holes. It was too cold to be out digging holes. The ground where we wanted to plant was too hard/rocky/frozen/wet/etc. And the list goes on and on.

But all that changed today. Today was the day.”
Read the rest (and see pictures) at http://www.heritagehomesteaders.com/nows-the-time (Link does not work, see below).

Thanks everyone. God bless.

Edited: So, if you clicked through to the link recently you have discovered that is is not working. That’s because the blog owner ran into some financial difficulty and shut down the blog. I guess he couldn’t afford the hosting any more. Sad 😦 At any rate, since the original website no longer exists, here is the full article.

Now’s the Time

I bought some trees today.

They fit in our van! 🙂

But all that changed today. Today was the day. We decided not to wait any longer. Why? Why today and not two years ago? Was it because our local nursery was having a good sale? They have the same sale every year, so why now? It might actually seem counter-intuitive. We just moved onto our homestead property into a 33 foot trailer. We have no running water (we haul it ourselves in camping totes which we fill up at my parent’s house), and are getting by just fine with one 30watt solar panel for electricity (good thing it’s sunny 90% of the time in Nevada!). We still have belongings piled up in several places across our house pad, and barely even have the inside of the trailer put together yet. Some might say that now is precisely not the time to be worrying about planting trees.

Tied to our awning support so they don’t blow over.

But that’s not how we see it. If we had planted those cherry trees at our last house when we first started talking about it, we would have had several years of cherry harvest (weather permitting) before we moved. Now is the time. If we wait till the “perfect time,” (ie, once we build the house and get a well dug) we’ll miss out on years of growth and hopefully harvests.

And that’s how it is with homesteading. There will never be a perfect time. If you’re thinking about starting a homestead, or adding something new to your existing one, or branching out into unknown skills; whatever it is, now’s the time to do it. Obviously, we all have obligations which we need to consider. The costs need to be counted and planning needs to be done. But there is always something you can do now, even if it is just the planning (rather than the dreaming). Find the small steps you can do to get you closer to your goal. Stop putting it off. Stop making excuses.

For us, that means buying trees which we’ll have to water with buckets of gray water for the foreseeable future. It means we moved with two small children into a 33 foot camping trailer on property with no water or electricity. It means I got a part time job so we can afford the mortgage on the property as well as saving money to build. It means a lot of hard work and sacrifices. But in the end it will be worth it. Actually, no. In the process, it is already worth it.

Already bearing fruit!

Already bearing fruit!

And every time I see those beautiful apple trees tied to the legs of our shade canopy (so they don’t topple over in our winds until we get them planted) I can’t help but smile and think of all the juicy apples and apple pies and apple sauce and apple butter and dried apples we’ll eventually have. And I’m proud of us for finally doing something to make it happen.

So what are you waiting for? What can you be doing now it make this the time for going after your dreams?

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

Settling in

I did the math and we have been living here on the homestead for 18 days. It’s funny because living in town seems like a another life. Almost like it was another person who was living that life. Today The Hubby and I sat on our swing on our new leveled out spot on the side of Castle Rock and watched the sunset and just talked and relaxed while Princess Girl learned to play volley ball with a college age “niece” who is visiting.

We’ve been settling in nicely, getting our outdoor lovong area set up. As the weather heats up, it’s nice to have something permanently set up so we can cook outside and not heat up the trailer.

We also put a layer of sealant on the roof of the trailer. During the last rainstorm we found a leak in the roof. 😦

The extra roof on top is a snow roof which was put on by the previous owner.

We built a trail up the hill to where we put our Sunset Swing and flattened out an area for the swing.

I didn’t get any pictures of the finished product because by the time we got it all set, the light was gone.

Today, my mom came up and helped set up another shade canopy. This was a free one given to us by some very special people.

Got the mended outer fabric on. Now time for the poles.

What a mess..

Not a very pretty sight at the moment. We’ve kinda thrown things by the trailer, no organization outside whatsoever. The bad weather last week didn’t help. Or the fact that it took us a couple days to get the inside organized (much more important and yet still not completely done).

image

But as I sit here and rest my aching knee (old injury), all I have to do is turn my chair to the side and get a beautiful peaceful view of our canyon.

image

But,  the hubby is done checking the fluid levels in the truck, so here we go for another load. This run is to get the chickens and take them to my parents’ house. The hens are going to live at the parents’ house until we get more settled in and a better water system figured out.

And speaking of water, our family of 4 used a total of 7 gallons of water for all our needs over two and a half days. Talk about conserving water! I’ll have to write another post about it soon.

Till then, be blessed.

Rain

What a day to do the bulk of our moving! It rains/snows less than 100 days out of the entire year* and this is the day it chooses to rain all day?

image

But I’m loving the mists rolling through our mountains. And hearing the rain on the trailer roof. 🙂

It’s a long process of moving in because with such a small space, we have to unpack each box as it comes through the door.

image

This is all our school supplies. With a child in third grade and one who will be hitting preschool sooner rather than later, we pared down as much as feasible. But, with some creativity and organization, all the supplies in all those boxes went in the cabinets pictured.

Ok, time to get to more unpacking!

EDITED: *This morning I looked up our average days of precipitation and I was slightly off. The average is not near 100 as I stated above. It’s more like 50! 14% of the year, and it chooses this week to do it??? And btw, it’s still raining today!

Empty House

I never expected that I would experience the emotions I’m having about packing up to leave this place. There are actually quite a few things I’m going to miss. And this sight makes me downright depressed.

image

For those that don’t know, this is where I stored our jams and jellies, etc which we sold to fund our adoption of our yougest child. I LOVED walking down these basement stairs and seeing all those jars gleeming brightly (granted, usually under a layer of dust). It brought to mind all the hours of hard work we put into making them. It was a labor of love  (believe me, I may not have carried her inside my body or birthed her, but I labored for that child!).

It also brought to mind one of the reasons I started canning in the first place: to reconnect with generations past and skills lost. To see those jars lined up on my basement stairs meant that I had re-captured a piece of the past. I had something in common with our foremothers.

image

Yes, I still have all those beautiful jars of deliciousness, but now they are in boxes, waiting to be moved. But our eventual new house is not going to have a 100 year old unfinished basement where I can line the walls with my canned goods. It was like a dream come true to have that. And in just a few days, I’ll have it no longer.

But, at least I have the memories and a bright future to look forward to. And who knows, maybe now that we’ll be on the homestead,  I’ll finally get that root cellar I’ve always wanted. That would be almost as good as a 100 year old unfinished basement.

Oh, and PS, I’m really on a roll with writing every day, but don’t get used to it. I’m new to this blogging for strangers thing (my last blog was mainly just for family.) Probably once the newness and fun wear off, I’ll slow down. But then again, I’m so excited to share, maybe I’ll keep write on going! (Pun intended 🙂 )

Time

We’ve been living in this nearly empty house,  waiting for it to sell, for almost three months now. The first things we packed were things off the walls. Including all but one of our clocks. It’s been 3 months, do you think I look at the watch I now wear 24/7 on my wrist when I want to know what time it is?

image

Of course not. I look here instead:

image

Doh!

But speaking of time, we’re not going to have a lot of it in the next several days to be posting. In fact, I don’t really have the time to be blogging right now. Tomorrow starts our big moving adtenture! We’re so excited I can’t help but share. By Monday, we should be living at the homestead. It’s really happening!

What we’ve been up to

So, I figured I’d reward our three subscribers by putting up some new content 🙂 We’ve been super busy the last several days.  Have we been out in the garden on these beautiful summer-like days? Nope. Making some delicious  yummies from the produce we still have in the freezer? Nope. So what have we been doing? Well, here’s a picture of our living room.

20140515_140930

Understand now? Yep, we’re packing. Because we’re moving in two days! Nearly a full month ahead of schedule! After this weekend we will be living on the homestead! (That was a lot of exclamation marks! 🙂 ) About the only ones in the family who are not excited are the baby and the dog because they don’t understand it all. But both will be totally stoked once we get out there. Sid because he’ll have 40 acres to run and run on, and the baby because she loves to play in the dirt. We are so looking forward to being able to let our girls roam and explore without fear.

Ok, I need to get back to packing. See you all later!

And for those who subscribed, thanks! I’m honored.
